Environment Protection

Environment Protection has been on CAG’s agenda since inception and we have been actively campaigning in different ways for protection of the natural environment such as forest land, wetlands, open spaces, parks, coastal areas etc from pollution, exploitation, acquisition, misuse, overuse and any other form of abuse. Protection of environment needs a strong understanding of the kind of environment and problems associated and for this an in depth research is necessary. CAG has been involved in conducting various kinds of research programmes which ultimately feed into policy change and in active campaigns. The information obtained from research is then used to back our campaigns. We have successfully carried out campaigns to create awareness and to get people involved through signature campaigns, public meetings, awareness programmes, letter and mail campaigns and in some cases even through Public Interest Litigations (PIL). Along with research and campaigns, CAG works towards building capacity of all stakeholders with regard to many issues.

Some of CAG`s critical intervestions are :
Campaign to protect the Adyar creek and surrounding wetland area in South Chennai as a protected sanctuary or national park. The creek today stands protected.
Pioneering a series of studies, audits and training programmes on medical waste management practices in Healthcare institutions in and around Chennai City. This was part of an effort to improve standards in Medical Waste Management in these institutions. CAG currently advises the Government of Tamil Nadu on this issue.
Campaign demanding that an environmental impact assessment study of the East Coast Road project be carried out. This campaign was rooted in the belief that all largeinfrastructure development projects must be subject to environmental and social impact assessments before they are implemented. The road was permitted to be constructed only after such a study was done and environmental concerns were addressed.
CAG is carrying out a novel research that focuses on developing an equity-based framework on ‘Access and Benefit Sharing’ and ‘Prior Informed Consent’ as a tool towards enhanced biodiversity conservation. This research forms part of a larger project undertaken by the South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics & Environment (SAWTEE), Nepal of which CAG is a member
