Social Media Poster: Sustainable Transport - Reclaiming Foothpaths

Reclaiming footpaths has been an ongoing civic issue with no clear resolution. For many Indians (like Shanthi, a domestic worker) walking, with a combination of public transport, remains the preferred mode of getting to work. How safe are they walking to work? While we have excellent initiatives such as the T. Nagar Pedestrian plaza by Greater Chennai Corporation that helped to secure pedestrian rights, we not only need more such spaces but also an attitude shift amongst motorists and other road users. In addition, there is also a need for consistent enforcement.  #PedestrianRightOfWay

As global temperatures and emissions rise, so does the impact of climate change especially on the health of pregnant women and developing foetuses. In a study by JAMA Network Open, air pollutants have the ability to go deep into a mother's lungs, threatening her pulmonary health.

In India, commercially sold foods are supposed to contain less than 2% fats, as this is a known 'nutrient of concern' and connected to the rising number of rising cardiovascular deaths in India. On the other hand, the consumption of vanaspati (widely used in restaurants, by street vendors and in the preparation of processed foods ) in India has risen by 51% in recent decades. So how much of this is ending up in our bodies? We now need food labels that tell us if these food standards are being kept.

Social Media Poster: Sustainable Transport - Disability Rights

By law, all public spaces should be accessible by the disabled (Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016). However, this remains only on paper, as we were woefully reminded by Mr. K. Raghuraman (disability activist), who spoke at the second National Pedestrians' Conference. Our public spaces must be designed keeping in mind the dignity of all users. It's time we saw the law in action!

Social Media Poster: Global Recycling Day 2022

#Recycling is unfortunately touted as the solution to #EndPlasticPollution. Companies want us to believe that as long as plastic is recycled consistently, there is nothing wrong with the vast amounts of plastic they are producing.

What they #FailedToMention is that 1) not all plastic are recyclable 2) even recyclable plastics are not recyclable everywhere - the technology specific to that type of plastic needs to be available 3) plastics are not recyclable endlessly - after a period of recycling, every bit of plastic ever produced will only end up in the landfill or an incinerator.

The internet has transformed how financial services work. It has brought in ease and convenience at levels we have never known before. But along with this have come the scams - clever, complicated schemes that either steal our identity and then our money or get us to willingly part with our money, and personal details. No one is exempt from this; but particularly vulnerable are the senior citizens and semi-literate population who have been forced to come to terms with a cashless society. The consumer guidance seminar on safe financial services organised by Citizen consumer civic Action Group, together with FEDCOT brought together experts to speak directly to consumers on staying safe online.
