The recent rains in Chennai has not only brought immeasurable destruction to the city and its infrastructure but it crippled the lives and livelihoods of the poor beyond any stretch of imagination. Rubbing salt into their wounds is the recent announcement from the government allotting 10000 houses built by TNSCB in Okkiam Thoraipakkam and Perumbakkam, several hours away from their places of work, where services are below par, and neck deep water was present till a week ago. Now is the time for the civil society to make a united call for a more considerate and equitable policy and specifically to advocate for the rights of the poor to live within the city.
To discuss this and the impending case at National Green Tribunal related to the cleaning of waterways which our RtC member, Penn Thozhilalar Sangam, has decided to implead in on behalf of the slum dwellers, we organize a meeting of the RtC members. The objective of this meeting is to take key decisions on collective action, and for that your presence is requested.
