While Chennai has the distinction of being one of the first cities in India to formulate an non-motorised transport (NMT) Policy, much work remains to be done to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. We need better infrastructure for NMT; recognition of their right to road space by motorised transport; and a supportive ecosystem that encourages citizens to shift from motorised to non-motorised transport. In addition to saving lives, these will help make our city more liveable, sustainable, and less polluted.
The consultation will include discussions about the above issues.
