This is a short report documenting the Zero Waste Cities Collaborative Project team's visit to Thanal. As members of this team at CAG, we were keen on understanding how this organization had been instrumental in helping Trivandrum set up an effective zero waste management system in place. The following are a series of short notes written by the team capturing the essential points of the different sites and stakeholders we visited during our field visits.
The garbage situation today
In January 2017, I joined CAG, specifically to work on solid waste management (SWM) projects. I started with the Mapping Waste Trails project, which aims to gain a better understanding of the lives of the informal waste pickers engaged in waste recycling in Chennai. Furthermore, we will be tracking the movements of certain recyclables, to ascertain the routes by which such materials traverse the city-scape, and the value added within each step in the routes.
