How safe are our roads? Tamil Nadu ranks highest in India for road accidents, recording a staggering 67,213 crashes in 2023. We rank second in fatalities, with 18,347 lives lost. This includes 1,682 pedestrians who were simply walking to work, school, or home. (MoRTH 2023). These numbers clearly show that our roads are not safe. We must act urgently, especially to protect our children. By creating safe routes to schools with proper infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, we can safeguard young lives and other vulnerable road users. In addition, implementing a comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan (backed by strong laws and consistent enforcement) will significantly improve safety for everyone.
