Author

Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG), in collaboration with Solar Advisory Units of Salem, Madurai, Thiruvarur and Dindigul organised outreach meetings on rooftop solar PV systems. The Solar Advisory Unit is an initiative by CAG, comprising a solar expert and a coordinator with the aim of guiding consumers on solar system-related enquiries.  The Solar Advisory Units are currently functioning in Madurai, Salem, Dindigul and Thiruvarur districts.

Participant Queries

Participants inquired about the technical and financial aspects of rooftop solar. Solar experts from the Solar Advisory units answered the queries. Key questions asked by the participants and the answers discussed are briefed below.

  1. Are the glass panels unbreakable?

No. While glass panels used in solar systems are designed to be durable and resistant to impact, they are not completely unbreakable. Most panels undergo rigorous testing and are built to withstand harsh weather conditions, but extreme conditions (like hail or heavy objects falling on them) can cause damage

  1. Can I get any subsidy under this scheme for installing a solar pump in my field?

No, the PM Surya Ghar Yojna does not provide subsidies for solar pumps for agriculture. There is a different scheme which provides subsidy for solar pump, named as PM KUSUM

  1. How can I use solar power during rains?

On rainy days, solar panels do not generate electricity. During cloudy days, it can generate electricity, although at a reduced capacity.

  1. What’s the life of solar panels?

Solar panels are typically designed to last 25 years or more and come with warranties that often cover performance and material defects.

  1. How to choose and select a reputed solar vendor?

To choose a reputable solar vendor, consider the following:

  • Check the PM Surya Ghar Yojna website for online ratings and number of installations.
  • Verify their certifications.
  • Compare quotations from multiple vendors.
  • Ensure they provide a complete installation
  1. What happens during a power cut?

In the case of a power cut, the system will automatically shut down the solar generation to protect utility workers.

  1. Are loans available under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme?

Yes, Banks are providing  “solar loans” under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme for providing financial assistance for those installing  solar energy systems.

Feedback:

Participants found the meeting to be highly useful and informative, gaining valuable insights into rooftop solar installations and expressing interest in adopting solar energy for their homes. The participants were informed about the Solar Advisory Unit, which is present in their respective districts, which will support consumers in accessing reliable information and raising grievances related to solar installations.

The Solar Advisory Units have guided a total of 29 inquiries, resulting in a combined solar capacity of 77kW spread across four distinct districts. This initiative reflects a growing interest in renewable energy solutions and showcases the potential for sustainable development in each of these areas.
