CAG strongly condemns the assassination of Gauri Lankesh, a noted journalist and activist

Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) is deeply anguished at the assassination of Gauri Lankesh, editor of the Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada weekly. She has stood up for the rights of historically discriminated castes and communities and against the discrimination of religious minorities. She has also been a vocal advocate for freedom of the press and freedom of speech. We strongly condemn the dastardly and outrageous act of cowardice by her killers who wish to spread fear and suppress dissent.

This attack is reminiscent of the murder cases of Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi, and Govind Pansare. These are attacks on views within society that are based on rationality and rooted in the scientific temper, and especially, on the constitutional provisions for social justice and equality. CAG demands a CBI-led investigation into the murder of Gauri Lankesh, and a status report on the killings of Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi, and Govind Pansare.

CAG is dedicated to a secular and just India, and stands in solidarity with citizens and groups peacefully defending our democratic rights.

In solidarity,
CAG Board and Team
