Capacity building programme on Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Passive Building Concepts - ECC Tiruvallur

Electricity Consumer Cell (ECC), Tiruvallur, organized a capacity building programme at Hotel Jaya, Ambattur, Tiruvallur District on January 27, 2019. The objective of the programme was to provide training to masons, electricians, and allied workers on topics such as energy efficiency, passive building concepts, and renewable energy. Mr.M.Dhanraj, ECC Coordinator welcomed the participants and gave an overview of the event.

 

 

Mr. K.Vishnu Mohan Rao, Senior Researcher, Citizen Consumer and civic Action Group(CAG), gave an introduction about the activities of ECCs and explained the purpose of conducting the capacity building programme.  

Mr. Jeya Kumar R, Researcher, CAG, made a presentation on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and passive building concepts. He described passive building concepts such as a building which permits natural lighting and ventilation, green coverage, selection of construction materials and methods. These have to be considered during the planning and construction of the buildings. Further, he explained concepts of energy conservation and energy efficiency at the household level, which included standards for electrical materials and other supportive modules, and; star rating and labelling for electronics appliances. In addition, he provided recommendations for the installation of appliances and advised the participants on how to use them efficiently. He also made a presentation on solar energy and rooftop solar installation.

 

The capacity building programme also had an interactive session between the speakers and the participants. The speakers quizzed the participants on the relationship between a) construction materials/methods and energy conservation, b) passive building concepts during the planning and construction of buildings, c) need for natural lighting and ventilation, d) choice of construction/electrical materials, wiring and electricity meters e) energy-efficient appliances and their placement in the house, f) renewable energy resources and rooftop solar. Feedback/responses received from participants have been documented, which will be used by CAG in preparing training materials for the upcoming capacity building programmes.  

Mr. Ashokan, ECC Advisor, gave an explanation on providing space in the building for electricity meters and ensuring their maintenance. Mr.Nagarajan, ECC Volunteer, concluded the session with the vote of thanks.
