Waste incineration is increasingly promoted as a sustainable solution for waste management through out the world even though it is at the bottom of the waste hierarchy. This study highlights how incinerator technology and infrequent maintenance schedules have been strongly linked with adverse health effects. Waste minimisation is the need of the hour!
CAG’s Zero Waste Team visited Thanal in Trivandrum team to understand how Thanal has been instrumental in helping the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation set up an effective zero waste management system in place. The visit introduced the team to the challenges and opportunities of working at a city scale.
This report presents the experience of Kripa Ramachandran, Researcher, and Sriram Radhakrishnan, Community Organiser, in making a wedding in Chennai zero waste. They found that hotels and caterers would be willing to adopt sustainable waste management practices. What is required for effective waste management in Chennai is the right directive for Bulk Waste Producers and improvements in the infrastructure and working conditions of the waste workers.
