Road safety data for Coimbatore obtained through RTIs

Sun, 27/10/2019 - 15:29

For several years, Tamil Nadu has been faring poorly in road safety, leading other states in fatalities and road crashes or coming close to. However, the data on this is not readily available to the public. The only sources of information are the yearly reports by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). These, of course, give only a broad state-level view. So, in 2017, CAG filed RTI (Right to Information) petitions to get district-wise data on crashes, deaths, injuries by road user group for the years 2011 to 2016; information on road safety funds and their usage; and on enforcement of road rules with regards to wearing helmets and seatbelts, drunk driving, and speeding. CAG received partial information from 23 districts, while 9 districts did not respond at all. This is the data received from Coimbatore district, distilled into an infograph for you.

Share and Care (GAF 2019)

CAG identified 2 colleges, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women and Chevalier T Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, in Chennai. Around 100 interested participants from each college were formed into groups (termed as “sharing groups”) and trained on the concept of sharing and its importance. A sharing group comprised of college students were encouraged to collect and share old clothes and books with others.

A competition was held on making useful materials and the products made by the students were exhibited for sale. A Puppet show on Share and Care was conducted to create awareness among students.

20 women from a low- income community in Royapettah, Chennai who showed interest in tailoring and making accessories, were identified. CAG organised an awareness programme in Royapettah where the community members attended the training program of making sustainable products like bags, wallets, door mats, accessories etc. from old clothes. During this training program a tailoring kit was provided to the community people.
