I remember one of my first attempts to “bring change home.” It was 2019, and I had just started my current job as a researcher in solid waste management issues. Full of enthusiasm, I rushed into my mother’s humid kitchen where she was peeling vegetables. I asked her to separate waste into three bins: red, blue, and green. She looked at me, confused, and asked, “What?” For many people in North Chennai back then, segregation was an unfamiliar idea. Her second question was even sharper: “Why?” That moment stuck with me.

Chennai's long-standing waste management issues had one last hope for decentralised management in the form of Micro Composting Centers (MCC) and Material Recovery Facilities (MRF), which were at least imperfectly functional.

A recent investigative report by the [1] New York Times on Delhi’s Waste-To-Energy (WTE) incinerators, analysed 150 air and soil samples gathered over a five-year period (from 2019 to 2023). The lead and arsenic laced smoke, and ash that contained as many as eight times, permissible levels of heavy metals such as cadmium has been a damning indictment of the capital’s WTE scene. 

மெட்ராஸ் நல்ல மெட்ராஸ்: தலையில் துண்டு, இடுப்பில் வேட்டி, செருப்பில்லாத  வெறும் கால் - 1967ல் ஒரு கிராமத்தான். அவருக்குப் பட்டணம் அவ்வளவு அந்நியமாக இருக்கிறது. சாலைகளையும், கட்டிடங்களையும், பார்த்து அப்படி வியக்கிறார். அங்குள்ள மனிதர்களைப் பார்த்து ஒரு கல்சுரல் ஷாக் அடைகிறார். விறுவிறுவென வெறும் காலில் நடக்கிறார். அண்ணா சாலையில், கூட்டத்தில் தடுமாறி விழுகிறார். பின்பு தலை தூக்கி "மெட்ராஸ்ஸ்ஸ் நல்ல மெட்ராஸ்ஸ்ஸ்!" என்று பாடிக் கொண்டே அன்றைய மெட்ராஸை  வலம் வருகிறார் நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் நாகேஷ். இந்த பாடல் அன்றைய மெட்ராஸை எதார்த்தமாகப் படம் பிடித்து இருக்கும்.
