A recent investigative report by the [1] New York Times on Delhi’s Waste-To-Energy (WTE) incinerators, analysed 150 air and soil samples gathered over a five-year period (from 2019 to 2023). The lead and arsenic laced smoke, and ash that contained as many as eight times, permissible levels of heavy metals such as cadmium has been a damning indictment of the capital’s WTE scene. 

மெட்ராஸ் நல்ல மெட்ராஸ்: தலையில் துண்டு, இடுப்பில் வேட்டி, செருப்பில்லாத  வெறும் கால் - 1967ல் ஒரு கிராமத்தான். அவருக்குப் பட்டணம் அவ்வளவு அந்நியமாக இருக்கிறது. சாலைகளையும், கட்டிடங்களையும், பார்த்து அப்படி வியக்கிறார். அங்குள்ள மனிதர்களைப் பார்த்து ஒரு கல்சுரல் ஷாக் அடைகிறார். விறுவிறுவென வெறும் காலில் நடக்கிறார். அண்ணா சாலையில், கூட்டத்தில் தடுமாறி விழுகிறார். பின்பு தலை தூக்கி "மெட்ராஸ்ஸ்ஸ் நல்ல மெட்ராஸ்ஸ்ஸ்!" என்று பாடிக் கொண்டே அன்றைய மெட்ராஸை  வலம் வருகிறார் நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் நாகேஷ். இந்த பாடல் அன்றைய மெட்ராஸை எதார்த்தமாகப் படம் பிடித்து இருக்கும்.

The people of Kodungaiyur, living under the shadow of mountains of waste, yearn for one thing - for the dumpyard that blights their neighbourhood to be gone. They have been promised this and more - a park where the dumpyard now stands is one of these promises. Generations have come and gone, but the dumpyard remains. 

பல வருடங்களாக கொடுங்கையூர் மக்கள் இந்த ஒரு வாக்கியத்தை கேட்டு கேட்டு அலுத்து விட்டார்கள் - அதாவது, கொடுங்கையூர் குப்பைமேடு சுத்தமாகிவிடும்; மேலும், அந்த இடத்தில் பூங்கா அமைக்கப்படும். இதை கேட்ட பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகள் இன்று பள்ளி செல்ல தொடங்கிவிட்டார்கள், ஆனால் அங்கே மாற்றம் ஏதும் நடந்திடவில்லை. இன்று மீண்டும் அந்த வார்த்தைகள் கொடுங்கையூர் வீதிகளில் உலாவருகிறது. இம்முறை கொஞ்சம் மும்முரமாக வேலைகளும் நடந்துகொண்டு இருப்பதால், அங்குள்ள மக்களும் மிகவும் நம்பிக்கையாக உள்ளார்கள்.

உலகின் பல  நாடுகளிலும் துரத்தி அடிக்கப்பட்ட எரிஉலைகள் இந்தியாவில் தலை தூக்குகின்றன. தமிழ்நாட்டில் மற்றும் 57 எரிஉலைகலைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு அரசு முடிவு செய்துள்ளது. இவையெல்லாம் நம் ஊருக்கு வருவதற்கு முன் நாம் அறியவேண்டியவை என்ன? மக்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பேராபத்துக்கள் என்ன?

Nearly 60 percent of municipal waste generated in Chennai is biodegradable waste (See this article for more on Chennai's solid waste management woes) ; this itself shows that half of the city’s solid waste problem can be solved if our biodegradable waste is managed effectively. The different methods we have to treat biodegradable waste are composting, biogas and bio-CNG generation.
