Webinar on Unite to Demand Your Bus Ride

What ails Chennai's public bus service and why it needs to be revived to former glory, was the focus of a webinar organised by CAG and SUM Net India. This webinar was part of a SUM Net India campaign, Lakh ko 50, urging the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and state governments to invest in robust public bus networks with a fleet of at least 50 buses per lakh population.

Ever since the lockdown was announced in March 2020 in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, there have been media reports of several accidents of vehicles transporting migrant workers across the country. With roads being relatively free during the lock down, people tend to drive fast, and post lock down, we can expect a definite surge in accidents as many people will be on the roads and will tend to drive fast. Vulnerable road users may be the worst affected.

For several years, Tamil Nadu has been faring poorly in road safety, leading other states in fatalities and road crashes or coming close to. However, the data on this is not readily available to the public. The only sources of information are the yearly reports by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). These, of course, give only a broad state-level view.
