In Helsinki, safety isn’t left to chance, it’s designed into every street. 

The city has reimagined its streets by narrowing roads, widening pavements, adding trees, and building over 1,500 km of dedicated cycling paths - all to make walking and cycling safer and more inviting. 

Chennai can take inspiration by identifying key pedestrian and school routes, redesigning junctions for slower vehicle speeds and creating a connected network of footpaths and cycle tracks. 

The plastic pollution crisis is threatening our health and our planet.

As leaders meet in Nairobi for #UNEA, let’s remind them: there’s no planetary resilience without tackling plastic pollution.

We need a global instrument to regulate plastics that truly protects people and the planet. 

Cities rise on concrete, but they survive on soil. Urban soils, alive with microbes, rich in biodiversity, storing carbon, filtering water, and cooling our streets, sustain life in every neighbourhood. Yet rapid expansion, land sealing, pollution, and neglect are cutting the ground from under our cities. Every green rooftop, every permeable pavement, and every patch of restored urban soil brings us closer to a healthier tomorrow.

Crisis denial shifts climate responsibility to the future, claiming action is only possible once we achieve greater wealth. In reality, delaying action makes solutions harder and more expensive. Climate justice demands we move now, not someday.

In Tamil Nadu, nearly 1 in 5 crashes and over 1 in 5 road deaths are caused by speeding. Children and senior citizens are the most at risk. 

In Helsinki, lower speed limits backed by speed cameras helped bring deaths to zero. 

It’s time for Chennai to slow down too. Enforce 30 km/h school zones and automated speed enforcement in Chennai. Small limits can save big lives.
