Share and Care (GAF 2019)

CAG identified 2 colleges, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women and Chevalier T Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, in Chennai. Around 100 interested participants from each college were formed into groups (termed as “sharing groups”) and trained on the concept of sharing and its importance. A sharing group comprised of college students were encouraged to collect and share old clothes and books with others.

A competition was held on making useful materials and the products made by the students were exhibited for sale. A Puppet show on Share and Care was conducted to create awareness among students.

20 women from a low- income community in Royapettah, Chennai who showed interest in tailoring and making accessories, were identified. CAG organised an awareness programme in Royapettah where the community members attended the training program of making sustainable products like bags, wallets, door mats, accessories etc. from old clothes. During this training program a tailoring kit was provided to the community people.

  • Educate consumers, including the younger generation, on the importance of sharing and sustainable consumption
  • Promote the concept of sharing among students by encouraging them to form a sharing group, collect used clothes and books to be shared
  • Encourage students to share used clothes with the needy and books with other students
  • Conduct competition among students to motivate them to reuse/recycle old clothes. Promote the concept of sharing among members of chosen community
  • Train the selected women from low income community on reusing/recycling of old clothes by using it as raw material for making bags, purse, etc
  • Facilitate income generation for the community women by organising sale during awareness programs in colleges

CAG elected to the Consumers International (CI) Council!

CAG, represented by S. Saroja, has been elected to the CI Council in the General Assembly held in Estoril, Portugal in May 2019. Saroja was the consensus candidate from India, which has a representation of 8 full members in CI. CI is headquartered in London and is the world federation of consumer groups that serves as the only independent and authoritative global voice for consumers, having over 240 member organisations in 120 countries.

Waste to Food (GAF 2018)

Citizen consumer and civic Action Group initiated a brief campaign called “Waste to Food '' in Arikamedu, Chennai. The main objective of the campaign is to educate consumers on sustainable consumption, waste management and collective use of compost from common composting units for kitchen gardens, and thus instill the practice of sharing of resources that will contribute to a healthy environment.

Bring about behavioral change among the targeted consumers on consumption habits and waste management, and educate them on the concept of sharing, which will contribute to a healthy environment.

Aware consumers – on sustainable consumption and importance of sharing

Train the community – on waste management in households and composting wet-waste without going to landfills, which will go a long way in protecting the environment

Educate consumers –  on collective use of compost from common composting units, for kitchen gardens, to produce organic food
