The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) released the Plastic Waste Management by-laws in August 2019 to tackle the city’s plastic problem. Let us have a look at what the by-laws bring to Chennai.
The proposed EIA Notification- in its early draft- fails to evolve from the 2006 Notification, and disappointingly, tries to further weaken environmental safeguards imposed on polluting industries.
CAG identified 2 colleges, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women and Chevalier T Thomas Elizabeth College for Women, in Chennai. Around 100 interested participants from each college were formed into groups (termed as “sharing groups”) and trained on the concept of sharing and its importance. A sharing group comprised of college students were encouraged to collect and share old clothes and books with others.
A competition was held on making useful materials and the products made by the students were exhibited for sale. A Puppet show on Share and Care was conducted to create awareness among students.
20 women from a low- income community in Royapettah, Chennai who showed interest in tailoring and making accessories, were identified. CAG organised an awareness programme in Royapettah where the community members attended the training program of making sustainable products like bags, wallets, door mats, accessories etc. from old clothes. During this training program a tailoring kit was provided to the community people.
