Road Safety Week 2023 (January 11 - 17) is a national event declared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to emphasise the need for proactively employed road safety measures, to reduce road crash risks and fatalities. To mark the week, Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police and the Citizen Consumer Club of Patrician College of Arts and Science, organised an event targeting the budding young drivers of the state emphasizing the need for safe, and responsible road behaviour.
WDoR 2022 was commemorated in a joint event by CAG, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police, and the Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Thiru Shankar Jiwal, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Chennai and Mr. M. Manakumar, Additional Transport Commissioner felicitated the event.
Modern times have seen the consumption of ultra-processed packaged foods soar to unprecedented levels. Front of Pack Labelling (FoPL) on processed foods could play a crucial role towards providing healthier food options for consumers,
CAG, Chennai, in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection and Environment Research Centre (TNCPERC), Tiruvarur organised a workshop on ‘Strengthening Road Safety Decision Making’, to understand global best practices on road safety such as increased penalties to act as deterrents and stronger legislation.
The internet has transformed how financial services work. It has brought in ease and convenience at levels we have never known before. But along with this have come the scams - clever, complicated schemes that either steal our identity and then our money or get us to willingly part with our money, and personal details. No one is exempt from this; but particularly vulnerable are the senior citizens and semi-literate population who have been forced to come to terms with a cashless society.
How safe are pedestrians on our roads?
India is a nation of walkers. According to the 2011 census, one third of all work trips are by foot. Women walk to work more than men. And 60% of school journeys are by walk (NSO). Indian roads are unsafe for walkers. Almost 26,000 pedestrians, an 85% increase in the last 5 years, have died on Indian roads. Chennai’s OMR stretch alone sees as many as 34 pedestrian deaths a year. 90% of these deaths were from pedestrians trying to cross the road (Greater Chennai Traffic Police, 2019).
‘A robust master plan can be ambitious but more importantly, must be achievable; it must include citizens’ views, for that is the ultimate aim of the plan - to build a city which offers its residents a sustainable lifestyle and equitable access to its resources’, said Sumana Narayanan, Senior Researcher, CAG. The webinar offered just that - a space to discuss the evolution and transformation of master planning and mobility in Chennai and a platform where citizens could discuss their aspirations for the third master plan.
