Two-wheelers are the preferred mode of transportation for many Indians. They are certainly more affordable than a car. It is no wonder then that, globally, India has the highest number of registered two-wheelers and they account for nearly 75% of all vehicles registered in the country (Road Transport Year Book 2020, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways).
High performance vehicles need to be handled by experienced, sensible drivers. While a fast bike might seem a great gift for your child, inexperienced drivers can find it challenging to handle the power and speed of such vehicles, increasing the likelihood of accidents. While no parent would actually choose this, don't inadvertently become the reason your child has lost life or limb. It is advisable for young drivers to start with a modest and manageable vehicle to gain experience and develop safe driving habits.
Tamil Nadu was the first state to bring in a Road Safety Policy as a part of its road safety management system. However, the status of the existing Road Safety Policy calls for an immediate review to ensure that the policy reflects prevailing road safety issues and identifies existing policy constraints. This report furnishes a set of recommendations for the state through a qualitative comparison of Road Safety Policies of other states in India.
#Chennai witnessed the second-highest number of road fatalities (998) in the country in 2021. Two-wheeler users were found to be the most vulnerable. It is important to have safe & adequate infrastructure in addition to instilling road discipline. Calling on all decision-makers to prioritise safer roads in the city's Third Master Plan vision.

Road Safety Week 2023 (January 11 - 17) is a national event declared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to emphasise the need for proactively employed road safety measures, to reduce road crash risks and fatalities. To mark the week, Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG) in collaboration with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police and the Citizen Consumer Club of Patrician College of Arts and Science, organised an event targeting the budding young drivers of the state emphasizing the need for safe, and responsible road behaviour.
