Economics of Road Crashes Series

Author

This month at CAG we will be looking at how road crashes affect the economy.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is only a number, what it measures is how much a country is able to produce in terms of goods and services.
When we “grow” as a country, this number automatically goes up because we are able to produce more. The resources spent on addressing the aftermath of road crashes takes away from this growth. These are resources that can be used elsewhere.

Speeding - Increases wildlife-vehicle collisions

Author

Speeding was the leading cause of road accident deaths in 2023, accounting for approximately 70% of fatalities. But humans are not the only ones harmed by speeding.

Between 2018 and 2023, approximately 1,552 wildlife roadkill accidents were recorded on Tamil Nadu highways alone! Increased noise from speeding interrupts communication signals between animals, disorients them and leads to a plethora of problems such as miscarriage, loss of hearing and habitat abandonment. Noise pollution can also make it difficult for animals to migrate or find their way home.
